Training Your Pet to Love Traveling
Whether you have a pair of adorable kittens or a trusty schnauzer who’s been by your side for almost a decade, you’re concerned about how to travel with him (or her). You want to protect your little furry one from danger and loneliness – and limit any damage done to them or your pocketbook.
Here are some tips for traveling with your pet:
1. Bring the essentials.
Does your dog have a chew toy he loves to gnaw on? Bring it. Does your cat love to nuzzle a special blue blanket? Bring it. Pack favorite treats/toys as well as any medicines or medical equipment you might need. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
2. Avoid over-packing.
Especially if you’re also traveling with kids, you may not have much room in your suitcases. So be resourceful. If you have to choose between your cat’s favorite toy mouse and his favorite scratching post, bring the toy mouse.
3. Plan and prepare.
If you’re going to travel by car, build your pet’s needs into your trip. For instance, your dog may need to “use the facilities” every few hours, so plan several rest stops. If you’re traveling by plane, read the air carrier’s instructions and restrictions. Depending on the size of the animal and the airline, you may be able to carry your pet with you in a carrier. Whatever you do, don’t forget the dog leash!
4. Consider pet sitting services as an alternative.
Traveling with a pet can be an exhausting, potentially expensive proposition. It may be easier – not just on your wallet but also on the animal – to leave him or her at home or to “kennel your friend” for the duration of the trip.
5. Learn from your trip.
Whatever happens — the good, the bad, and the ugly — learn from the trip to plan subsequent travel. If your pet is miserable; next time, get a pet sitter. If your pet travels well, consider going on more diverse adventures in the future!
